Reflections :: our board :: Melody Bowdon

 

Melody Bowdon is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Central Florida. Her research and teaching focus on community impacts of service-learning, particularly in technical and professional communication. She has completed several funded research projects to assess community and student outcomes of service-learning and civic engagement across the state of Florida and serves as Senior Research Fellow for Florida Campus Compact. Dr. Bowdon is co-author ofService-Learning in Technical and Professional Communication with Blake Scott. She co-edited the Spring 2005 special issue of Reflections on service-learning in professional communication with Jim Dubinsky and has been a member of the editorial board since 2004. She also serves on the board of Community Literacy and has published articles in several journals and essay collections on related topics. Since 1992, she has taught 46 service-learning courses at three universities and has won several teaching and community service awards, including the 2007 Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award for Florida and the 2005 Gulf South Summit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Service-Learning in Higher Education. She was a 2005 and 2006 finalist for the Thomas Ehrlich national award for service-learning faculty. Dr. Bowdon has directed UCF*s Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing, a program that includes a significant service-learning component, since 1999. She has also served as Interim Director of Service-Learning on her campus and was program chair for the 2007 International Research Conference on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement. Dr. Bowdon is currently working on a book about professional writing in the nonprofit sector.
